Every 730 days, AIGA Cleveland hosts a biennial competition which inevitably discovers and celebrates the best of the best in design. This competition is a part of AIGA Cleveland’s ongoing effort to promote and celebrate exceptional design. Not only does the competition spread a positive message about the benefits of design, it plays a significant role in demonstrating the important contributions that design provides our community.
Westfield Bank – Brand Identity

shark&minnow continued to evolve and cultivate the brand that we developed and designed for Westfield, through our partnership with its affiliate company, Westfield Bank. The bright and visually impactful approach to design in printed collateral, branch environment, ATM, digital assets and photography is reflective of Westfield Bank’s modern mindset in a time honored industry. The written brand voice cultivated in all marketing materials literally speaks to the personalized and collaborative relationship of Westfield Bank with its customer base.
Port of Cleveland – Rock the Port

shark&minnow partnered with the Port of Cleveland to plan, develop and produce a free, public festival on Saturday, August 18, 2019 at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and North Coast Harbor to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The family-friendly community event featured live music, Cleveland Harbor cruises on the Goodtime III, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Great Lakes Science Center & S/S William G. Mather self-guided tours, fun maritime activities and giveaways. Design assets for the event included sidewalk clings, environmental signage, coloring kits, temporary tattoos and a custom illustrated photo display.
NEORSD – Installation

To engage and inform the public regarding the major construction initiative happening below ground surface, to repair and rebuild the Doan Valley Storage Tunnel system. Through a series of bold and visually impactful construction banners located on-site in University Circle, the narrative of the importance of this project to the health of Lake Erie is translated. The hundreds of feet of banner design acts as both a public art installation, as well as an educational tool to spark curiosity and raise public awareness.
Downie Photography – Depth

Depth was created to showcase the creative work of Downie Photography. The content created supports the images by giving the reader further insight to the projects, process and personality behind the studio. The goal was to create a promotional piece that engaged its audience beyond a typical direct mail promotion. Depth invites the viewer to experience the imagery, learn about the subjects in front of the lens, and connect with the content in a formal magazine layout.
Meet the Judges
Each competition year, a select group of design professionals are invited to Cleveland, to evaluate Design 730 Competition entries and are tasked with choosing pieces that are both aesthetically pleasing and effective at solving challenges. The Design 730 Competition panel of judges includes some of our industry’s top creative professionals.
Christine Taylor
Hallmark
Christine Taylor is a multidisciplinary creative with degrees in psychology and design. Currently she is a Creative Manager in licensing at Hallmark, where she oversees the creative product development and relationships between internal development teams and outside movie and TV studio licensed brands like Warner Bros., DC Comics, Harry Potter, FOX, LEGO, Minecraft, NBCUniversal, Star Wars, Star Trek and AMC’s The Walking Dead. She is also the current Creative Director for PopMinded — Hallmark’s pop culture brand experience—overseeing the pop-up and online shops, fan convention activities, social media, webcasts and more. Previously at Hallmark, she worked as a designer in several areas of the company including books, the internal corporate marketing and branding studio, and the B2B loyalty marketing studio working with brands like State Farm and Target. As a freelancer, Taylor has created branding and collateral for local KC theaters, bars, restaurants and nonprofit organizations. She has spoken at multiple Design and Branding conferences as well as corporate events and AIGA Chapters. She is past president and programming director of the AIGA KC Chapter and current AIGA National Board Member, where she has co-chaired the 2017 AIGA Gala Awards and is the current chair of the Corporate Relations Committee.
Dian Holton
AARP
Dian Holton is Senior Deputy Art Director at AARP and a freelance visual/brand associate for the GAP. Her background includes publishing (print/digital), integrated marketing, retail installation, styling and, most recently, footwear designer. She currently serves on the AIGA Washington DC chapter board as their Strategic Initiatives which oversees the Design Continuum Fund scholarship, Design for Good, Women’s Leadership and Design for Democracy. Her passions include education, philanthropy, fashion and pop culture.
Robynne Raye
Modern Dog Design Co.
Robynne Raye co-founded Seattle based Modern Dog Design Co in 1987, an internationally acclaimed design and illustration studio. Her posters have been exhibited internationally, are in the archives of major libraries, and are collected by museums worldwide. For over 25 years, Robynne has lectured extensively about design and design issues, as well as led workshops around the world. In 2013, Graphic Design USA Magazine listed her as one of the ’50 Most Influential Designers Working Today’. She is the co-author of “Modern Dog, 20 Years of Poster Art” (Chronicle Books, 2007) and “Inside the World of Board Graphics: Skate, Surf, Snow” (Rockport, 2011) and author of “1000 Dog Portraits” (Rockport, 2014).
